The station signed on September 2, 1986, operated by a joint venture of Gannon University and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie. Gannon students produced programs for the station, including a televised Mass and daily talk show, and participated in station operations for credit.

In April 1990, WETG became an affiliate of Fox. As a result, the Gannon University sold the station to Erie Broadcasting in 1994; while the university retained four hours a week of programming, including the Mass on Sundays.

In 1995, Erie Broadcasters then sold WFXP to Jason Elkin, former founder of New Vision Television with SJL Broadcasting, owners of NBC affiliate WICU-TV handling the LMA for the station. In May 1997, WICU-TV produced the 10pm newscast for WFXP. During that period, this logo was similar used by its affiliate station WMSN-TV in Madison, Wisconsin.

In 1998, Nexstar Media Group brought ABC affiliate WJET-TV from the locally owned Jet Broadcasting, with the LMA of WFXP was taken over; the production of the 10PM newscast however, was moved to WJET-TV on August 1, 1998.

The same 1997 logo was switched to the black-white-red color scheme, which is also formerly used by its owned and operated station KSAZ-TV in Phoenix. As of 2021, it is one of the few affiliates to continue using the classic "searchlights" Fox logo since 1996, together with Sinclair-owned Fox affiliates WBFF in Baltimore and WMSN-TV in Madison.
