Originally signed on-air on April 6, 1986 by Pappas Telecasting Companies, KPTM declined then-upstart network Fox's affiliation offer shortly after it signed on. The station eventually became one of the network's affiliates on August 28, 1988. Its logo is nearly identical to that of then-sister station KMPH-TV's from this time period.
