This version was bundled with Windows Longhorn pre-reset builds since build 4067. It would be scrapped alongside the original Longhorn development plans in 2004 due to the reset.
After the development reset, Windows Vista builds would be bundled with Outlook Express 6 until build 5435.

The Windows Mail app was discontinued in 2009 and temporarily replaced with Windows Live Mail.

With the release of Windows 8, a new Metro UI app called Mail was integrated in the OS, this as a replacement for Windows Live Mail.

This logo was originally designed for Windows 10X, but was only used on Windows 10 and 11.
In June 2023, Microsoft announced that Mail, Calendar and People would be replaced by Outlook. Outlook would become the default mail client for Windows in 2024. The migration of users from Mail to Outlook started in June 2023.
