Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a compatibility layer for running Linux command-line tools and apps on Windows, and Windows Server.
WSL was originated from a cancelled project called Project Astoria, which it was designed to run Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile, but it was shelved and it is being retooled as a Linux emulator for Windows 10 PCs.
