Windows Embedded Automotive was first released on December 4, 1998, as Windows CE Auto PC. It was initially designed specifically for Clarion's AutoPC in-car entertainment device.[1]

On October 16, 2000, Windows CE Auto PC was rebranded as Windows CE for Automotive.[2][3]

2002–2005

Microsoft Windows Automotive logo

On October 21, 2002, Windows CE for Automotive was rebranded to Windows Automotive[4]

2005–2010

Windows Automotive 5.0 logo

Version 5.0 was released in 2005.

2008–2010

Microsoft Auto logo

In 2008, Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Auto, the name of their middleware and development platform for Windows Automotive applications and configurations.[5]

Windows Embedded Automotive

2010–2021

Windows Embedded Automotive 7 Wordmark (Black)

On October 19, 2010, Windows Automotive was rebranded to Windows Embedded Automotive, with Version 7.[6] Windows Embedded Automotive 7 is the last version and is unsupported by March 1, 2021.[7]
