In 1929, Paramount Pictures acquired a 49% stake in the Columbia Broadcasting System (with William S. Paley and his associates owning the remaining 51%), which saw the potential of radio and aimed to use CBS to promote its movies and stars. At one point, there were even discussions about renaming the network "Paramount Radio".

The Great Depression and financial hardships forced Paramount to sell its shares back to CBS in 1932, making CBS an independent company once again. Coincidentally, this would predate both their parent companies' mergers between 1999 and 2005, and again since 2019.

In 1997, CBS Radio filed an initial public offering of stock. The company was renamed Infinity Radio as a result. The name "Infinity" came from a company acquired by Westinghouse (which in 1995 purchased CBS) in 1996, the Infinity Broadcasting Corporation (see above). CBS Corporation would hold 81.8% of the new company.

CBS Radio

Upon the start of the new year 2006, Viacom (which had purchased CBS in 2000 and had bought out Infinity in February 2001) was split into two companies: a new Viacom and CBS Corporation. In preparation for the split, in December 2005, Viacom reverted Infinity Radio to the CBS Radio name. CBS Radio became part of CBS Corp., although Infinity Broadcasting Corp. continued to be incorporated within CBS.

On February 2, 2017, CBS Radio agreed to be acquired by Entercom Communications. The Federal Communications Commission approved the merger on November 9, and the transaction closed on November 17.
