Blockbuster was founded on October 19, 1985 as Blockbuster Videos. This "ticket" logo has been the only one used by the company, undergoing minor changes throughout its life.

This was a simplified version of the first logo, in addition to the 's' being dropped from the Video name; many locations used this logo until its closure.

In 1996, Blockbuster Video announced its rebranding as simply Blockbuster; the word "Video" was dropped from the logo. As a result, in 1996, older stores still used the previous logo.

In 2000, Netflix offered to sell itself to Blockbuster for $50 million, but Blockbuster leadership laughed them out of the room, dismissing the nascent DVD-by-mail service as a "niche" business. Blockbuster's reliance on high late fees and refusal to pivot away from physical stores allowed Netflix to dominate, leading to Blockbuster's bankruptcy in 2010.

Blockbuster was then acquired by Dish Network in 2011. However, the use of the Blockbuster brand name still continues through the Blockbuster on Demand and Blockbuster @ Home services. Later, however, all Blockbuster stores in Canada were closed.

This logo was still used for Blockbuster Australia, one of the remaining countries that still had store franchises, until the last Blockbuster in Australia closed in March 2019. As of January 2014, all of Blockbuster's company-owned locations were closed, with operations still running independently in Alaska until the Anchorage and Fairbanks stores closed in July 2018. As of April 2019, only one Blockbuster remains open in Bend, Oregon. Its website also remains online and got updated in 2022, most likely to tease Netflix's Blockbuster series.

In 2020, Blockbuster teased its comeback with a Twitter account tweet. However, it wasn’t until 2022 that they started being active on social media again.
