KTVK originally signed on the air on February 28, 1955, as a ABC affiliate. The call sign was originally quoted "Because TV will be our middle name" by former Governor of Arizona, Ernest McFarland.

This logo is similar to the one used since 1977 by ABC affiliation KIII in Corpus Christi, Texas.
KTVK became independent on January 9, 1995, after the affiliation swap which saw the ABC affiliation move to then-Fox affiliate KNXV-TV, (which aired ABC programs on a secondary basis, due to channel 3 and ABC parting ways) with Fox moving to then-CBS affiliate KSAZ-TV, which then sent the CBS affiliation back to then-independent (formerly CBS affiliate back then) station KPHO-TV. The station also aired WB programs on a secondary basis until KASW signed on later that same year.
