DXAW 640 (AM)

1949–1972

Logopedia InfoWhite LOGO MISSING

DXAB's precursor DXAW 640 came on air in 1949, established by The Blue Network, formed by Jim Wills, who worked with the American NBC and named after what was one of his former home network's two networks (The Blue Network, operated alongside NBC's Red Network) that was then spun off and became ABC. In 1960, the Lopezes acquired the network, and with it DXAW and sister station DXJW in Zamboanga, which would become part of ABS-CBN. [1]

In 1972, the station went off the air with ABS-CBN's forced closure due to martial law. The frequency was later taken over by Banahaw Broadcasting Corporation with callsign DXWW, which was later transferred to Presidential Broadcast Service, moved to 675 khz in 1978, changed callsign to DXRP, and eventually moved to the FM band, on 88.7 mhz.

In 1997, ABS-CBN returned to Davao AM radio after 25 years with DXAB - sharing the same last two call letters as DYAB in Cebu. As with DYAB (with a green background), it used a different background - red - as opposed to DZMM's blue.

On May 5, 2020, the station's broadcasting activities, together with that of ABS-CBN's other television and sister radio stations, ceased following the cease-and-desist order issued by the National Telecommunications Commission due to the expiration of ABS-CBN's legislative license to operate, the renewal of which was rejected on July 10, 2020. Today, the 1296 khz frequency remains vacant.
