The first use of DZMM was in 1959 with the launch of a classical music station on 1340 kHz under licensee Monserrat Broadcasting System (bought by the Lopezes that owned ABS and CBN on March 1957) - and thus with no connection to the DZMM that emerged in 1986.

In 1966, DZMM transferred to 1000 kHz, while 1340 kHz went to DZBC, renamed as DZYL, which then moved to 1160 khz in 1969 (swapping frequencies with DZMY) and then moved back to 1340 khz and became DZOA in 1971.

In 1972, the station went off the air with ABS-CBN's forced closure due to Pres. Ferdinand Marcos' declaration of martial law. The frequency later went to DWXX of Hypersonic Broadcasting, which moved to 1026 kHz in 1978, then was sold twice, first to NBC in 1987 (under which it changed callsign twice to DZAM and DZAR) and then to SMNI in 2005, and went off air with the suspension (later cease-and-desist) order of the NTC against SMNI in 2023.

On June 1986, the Presidential Commission of Good Government, which had by then sequestered RPN, IBC, and BBC, awarded to ABS-CBN the 630 kHz frequency (formerly with RPN's DWWW), which ABS-CBN relaunched as DZMM (now standing for Malayang Mamamayan) the next month. The branding came in the aftermath of the People Power Revolution that deposed president/dictator Ferdinand Marcos and with it ended the strict media censorship that had been the norm between 1972 and 1986, thus restoring press freedom and paving the way for ABS-CBN's return, hence, "Malayang Mamamayan".

It launched alongside DWKO, on 101.9 MHz (formerly of BBC's DWOK), on July 16, 1986, and the two launched ahead of the relaunch of ABS-CBN Channel 2 (with Channel 2 reclaimed from BBC) which came in September.

DZMM began adopting the "Radyo Patrol" branding of precursor DZAQ in 1995, but the tagline "Ang Himpilan ng Malayang Mamamayan" was still used until 1999.

During this period, the audio feed of DZMM began to be made available globally, via TFC and the Internet. Its counterparts in Cebu (DYAB) and in Davao (DXAB) also emerged in the latter half of the 1990s.

In line with the overhaul of the logo of parent ABS-CBN, DZMM (and its Cebu and Davao counterparts DYAB and DXAB) received a new logo in 2000, and, after 14 years, a new slogan - "Una sa Balita, Una sa Public Service", which was used until 2020, only to be reinstated five years later.

In 2007, the station began being simulcast on TV via DZMM TeleRadyo on cable and eventually, in several points and various forms in its history, on digital free TV.

The logo can still be seen on TV Patrol World (now TV Patrol) until 2010 despite the logo change on September 28, 2009.

On May 5, 2020, the station's broadcasting activities, together with that of its television and sister radio stations (including Cebu and Davao counterparts DYAB and DXAB, and sister FM station MOR 101.9), ceased following the cease-and-desist order issued by the National Telecommunications Commission due to the expiration of ABS-CBN's legislative license to operate, leaving 630 kHz vacant until 2023.

Despite DZMM's shutdown, its programming continued via DZMM TeleRadyo, which was rebranded to TeleRadyo on May 8, 2020.

On June 30, 2023, the 630 kHz frequency was officially acquired by the Philippine Collective Media Corporation (PCMC). This acquisition marked a pivotal moment for ABS-CBN, signaling its strategic return to the radio airwaves after a three-year hiatus following the 2020 cease-and-desist order. To facilitate this comeback, ABS-CBN entered into a joint venture agreement with Prime Media Holdings, Inc.—the indirect parent company of PCMC. This partnership led to the establishment of Media Serbisyo Production Corporation (MSPC), a joint entity designed to manage content and airtime.

Coinciding with the frequency handover, PCMC initiated a soft launch of the station under its new callsign, DWPM Radyo 630. This transitional period allowed the station to test its signal and refine its programming lineup before its formal grand launch, which took place on July 17, 2023. Alongside this, TeleRadyo was renamed TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

On May 29, 2025, at 8:00 pm (PHT), DWPM Radyo 630 strategically rebranded as DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 to enhance the station's market competitiveness by reviving the legendary ABS-CBN news and public service identity after five years. Along with the name change, the station reinstated its classic tagline, "Una sa Balita, Una sa Public Service", and DZMM's long-standing color mix of blue, red, and yellow. TeleRadyo Serbisyo was also reverted to DZMM TeleRadyo with the return of the DZMM branding.

Even if the station's legal callsign remained as DWPM for some time, this rebrand comes before the 40th anniversary of DZMM in 2026.
