DZQL was launched by CBN alongside DZXL and DZYL-FM on September 24, 1956. Its first format was "Radio Reloj", a 24-hour news radio station (much like the "Radyo Patrol" format of DZAQ and DZMM). It made history by being the first to break the news of the death by plane crash of Pres. Ramon Magsaysay, and for conducting a non-stop coverage of the event.

In 1957, DZQL moved to 830 kHz, formerly of Monserrat Broadcasting's DZMY (by now Monserrat had been acquired by the Lopezes, owners of CBN, a month after acquiring ABS) which moved to 1160 kHz.

The Radio Reloj format was dropped in 1962 and DZQL was then leased by Jaime Vergara and was branded as Transit Radio until the mid-60s, when ABS-CBN took back control of the station which was soon reformatted to a youth-oriented pop music station.

On May 2, 1971, DZQL returned to 1160 kHz as D'WOW (the former DZMY) moved to 830 kHz.

In 1972, the station went off the air with ABS-CBN's forced closure due to martial law. In 1973, the frequency was taken over by BBC, which launched DWWA, which then became BBC's sole AM radio station in Manila (with new regulations causing the shut down of DWWX and DWWO), had a callsign change to DWAN, moved to 1206 kHz in 1978, would be operated by IBC from 1986, and had gone off air twice (2004, 2010) and returned twice (2007 as MMDA Traffic Radio and again in 2024 as D'WAN).
