The Dreamcast was the first sixth-generation video game console and the final home console made by Sega, before it became a third-party publisher. In North America, the console was branded as Sega Dreamcast until early 2000.

First unveiled on May 21, 1998, during the New Sega Challenge Conference, an event at which the console was first introduced to the world.

The European/Australasian version was colored blue to avoid trademark infringement issues with German video game publisher Tivola, who had been using an orange swirl as its logo since 1995.
