2003–2012
Fren by Mobile-8 was first released on 8 Desember 2003 as the only CDMA service that was not a Fixed Wireless Access license. Like all GSM operators in Indonesia, its mobile phone numbers begin with 0888. Fren received a Fixed Wireless Access license in 2009 with Fren Duo (the only starter pack in Indonesia combining two numbers in one card, with both mobile phone code and local phone code), replacing Hepi. Fren Duo was replaced in January 2011 by Smartfren Lokal Plus.
The Fren brand was retired in 2012 following integration with Sinar Mas-owned Smart brand to form Smartfren in 2010.
