Samsung Group (often shortened to Samsung) is a South Korean multinational manufacturing conglomerate. Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938 as a trading company. Over the next three decades, the group diversified into areas including food processing, textiles, insurance, securities, and retail. Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s and the construction and shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s; these areas would drive its subsequent growth. Unlike its rival LG, Samsung is not a company in the traditional sense; it consists of multiple companies sharing the Samsung name and logo in a business group, similar to a Japanese keiretsu like Mitsubishi.

After starting of heavy industrialization in South Korea in 1961, the Samseong Geulub was originally a trading company without any regular corporate logo, instead using the Hanja 三星 (sam-seong, lit. "three stars"). The Hanja wordmark was still used until 1993, when Samsung's identity was drastically refreshed. This wordmark has recently appeared on 1980s throwback Samsung Lions jerseys.

In 1993, then-CEO Lee Kun-hee decided to drastically streamline the Samsung Group due to its reputation of low-quality products. This resulted in Samsung retiring the S-star for good and introducing a unified identity for the group designed by Lippincott, with all of its subsidiaries adopting a consistent design scheme.
