Gradually from 1995, RTL 5 started decreasing its entertainment profile and aimed to become a news channel, due to the acquisition of Veronica and concerns over RTL's near-monopoly on commercial television with three channels alone.

1996–1997

The logo was revised in 1996 when the EC blocked the request to convert RTL 5 into a news channel. During this season, 5 in het land, a counterpart to SBS6's Hart van Nederland, appeared. During this period, the national anthem of Luxembourg was played at closedown.

RTL5 Nieuws & Weer

1997–1998

Right at the beginning of 1997, on January 1, the new RTL 5 Nieuws & Weer format launched, but there were carryovers from previous phases of the channel. Implementation was gradual, as in the first two months, the older RTL 5 logo appeared in some graphics. SBS criticized RTL 5's lack of commitment in delivering a comprehensive news format and took to the European Commission; RTL 5 was still showing American movies after the main 8pm news in this period.

After quietly dropping the Nieuws & Weer subtitle in the summer of 1998, a new look and logo were unveiled that fall.
