Metro is a chain of hypermarkets and supermarkets created in November 1992 by the Wong family as Wong's sub-brand to expand across the country. Since 2007, it has been owned by Cencosud, a Chilean conglomerate owned by Horst Paulmann and his family. In 2013, this brand, along with Jumbo, was expanded to Colombia.
Hipermercados y Supermercados Metro
1992–2004
From the late 1990s until October 2004, Metro had two separate logos that distinguished between hypermarkets and supermarkets.
Hiper (1992–2004)
This logo was identical to that of the Chilean supermarket chain Ekono in the 1980s.
Super (1999–2004)
Metro
2002–2004
A slightly altered version of the logo for hypermarkets (without the word "HIPERMERCADOS") was used from October 2002 as part of the chain's tenth anniversary and an important first step towards unifying the formats under a single logo and brand.
On October 28, 2004, the brand was unified with Metro's only format.
