On December 10th, 1985, Continente opened its first store in Matosinhos as a joint-venture between Sonae (who already owned the Modelo supermarkets) and French retailer Promodès (owners of the Continent chain), being later expanded into NorteShopping in 1998.

In 1995, Continente changed its logo to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
2005–present

On October 27th, 2005, Continente changed its logo to celebrate its 20th anniversary, having a cost of €2 million, with the Loures store being the first one to adopt it. This is also the first logo to not follow the same guidelines as its former French parent company as it was absorbed by Carrefour in 2000.
