In 1977, the Sunkist name was licensed by orange farmers' cooperative Sunkist Growers to General Cinema Corporation, who owned a high-volume independent Pepsi bottling operation. It first went to market in May 1978, with a diet version introduced the following year. In 1984, Sunkist was sold to Del Monte, under whom Sunkist Natural was introduced, only for the brand to be sold to Cadbury Schweppes in 1986.
