After less than two years of operation, owner Dayton Hudson Corporation sold the chain to Barnes & Noble in 1986. On some signage, the full ellipsis after "etc." was replaced with a singular period.
Software Etc.
1988–1994
During this period, Software Etc began its expansion into the video game retail market with the opening of the first GameStop location in September 1991. This store was adjacent to the Dayton's department store at Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota.
1994–2005
Splitting away from Dayton Hudson, Software Etc. merged with Babbage's in 1994 to form NeoStar Retail Group. In 2005, the names of Software Etc and sister stores Babbage's and FuncoLand were fully folded into the GameStop banner.
