GameStop began as Software Etc.'s foray into the video game retail market, and, as such, the logo uses a modified form of Software Etc.'s type style. The first GameStop location opened on September 21, 1991, at Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota. In 1994, Software, Etc. merged with Babbage's to form NeoStar Retail Group.

After NeoStar was renamed to Babbage's Etc in 1996, this logo was adopted to match that of its parent company. This logo was only used on storefronts.

1999–2000

In 1999, Babbage's Etc. was acquired by Barnes & Noble, the former owner of Software Etc. from 1986 to 1994, and GameStop was rebranded again. After this acquisition, the chain expanded out of the north Midwest for the first time and grew rapidly. In May 2000, Barnes & Noble also purchased Funco, Inc., the parent company of competitor FuncoLand, renamed the company to GameStop, Inc., and repositioned Babbage's Etc as a subsidiary.

On August 15, 2000, GameStop introduced a new logo with two colors separating the "Game" and "Stop". This logo is still used on most signs in the US. During that time, GameStop operated stores at both indoor malls (former Software Etc./Babbage's stores) and strip malls (former FuncoLand stores). In October 2004, GameStop Corp. was spun off from Barnes & Noble, and soon acquired competitor EB Games in 2005.

In December 2012, the shade of red on "Stop" was slightly tweaked, the letters were slightly spaced out, and the "p" was extended downwards.

This logo originated with the opening of the first Canadian GameStop location on July 28, 2021, and would be introduced in the United States in September.
