Regional sister chain Volume ShoeSource would be assimilated into Payless by 1995. Some locations continued to display this era's signage until the chain's closure in 2019.

On August 18, 2020, Payless ShoeSource re-emerged from bankruptcy, announcing plans to open 300 to 500 outlets by 2025, and streamlining their brand name to simply Payless.
The first Payless to open after the bankruptcy was a North Miami flagship location near their new headquarters in Edgewater, Florida, with a scheduled opening of November 2020. This would be delayed to December, and once more to March 1, 2021. Despite the company's earlier hopes, no other Payless outlets would open, with the flagship store being shuttered alongside their American online retail operations in August 2023.
