Dreft was the first synthetic detergent introduced in the United States, predating Tide by some 13 years. Early advertisements touted its use for a variety of cleaning purposes including delicate laundry and dishwashing, as the early detergent formulations were not yet suitable for heavy-duty laundry cleaning.
