Banco de Oro
1976–2002
In November 1976, Acme was acquired by the SM Group, the group of companies owned by retail magnate Henry Sy, and renamed Banco de Oro Savings and Mortgage Bank. The SM group also went on to own another large bank, Chinabank.
In 1994, BDO became a commercial bank and two years later, became a universal bank, which led to the bank's name being changed to the current Banco de Oro Universal Bank (BDO Unibank). Years later, the bank began to underake a series of mergers beginning with Dao Heng Bank (2001), and 1st e-Bank (2002).
2002–2007
BDO would take over the Philippine operations of Santander in 2003 and of UOB in 2005. Soon after, SM would acquire a stake in what was then the third-largest bank, Equitable PCI Bank, and on January 2006 began the process of merging it with BDO. On December 2006, the merger was approved, to take effect in 2007.

In 2007, BDO changed its logo after it absorbed Equitable PCI Bank.
