In 1969, Audi merged with German motorcycle manufacturer NSU to form Audi NSU. The rings from the Auto Union logo became the badge used on cars, and the Auto Union name was kept in the corporate name.

In 1986, Audi NSU Auto Union AG shortened its name to just Audi AG, effectively retiring the NSU and Auto Union brands.

The wordmark was removed altogether, and the rings are now rendered in flat black, rather than in three dimensions. The Audi wordmark no longer appears with the four rings, but instead with the company slogan. Audi Type, the font used on the wordmark, is the exclusive corporate typeface of Audi AG, used in advertising.

In November 2024, Audi, along with SAIC Motor and FAW Group, announced a new Chinese electric vehicle brand under the name AUDI with a logo (used on the E concept model) without the four rings to distinguish both brands. It debuted in China in mid-2025.
