Steam was first announced by Valve on 2002 Game Developers Conference on March 21, 2002 and would go into beta soon after. The service, however, wouldn't commence operations until September 12, 2003.

On April 26, 2010, a metalic variant was officially launched with the client UI update, although it was debuted in the public beta released on February 23.

On August 15, 2014, Steam's logo was given a refresh, a new icon was made. Additionally, a new font was incorporated alongside the logo on the main client. Though it wasn't used until sometime in 2016, when the new logo and wordmark was finally incorporated into the website. As of September 2018, the current logo is now also used as a favicon, replacing the previous one that had been used since the service's launch.
Notes
As of January 1st 2024, Valve announced that they have dropped the support for Windows 7 or older OS, making Windows 10 as a minimum requirement. And as in January 1st 2026, support for 32-bit windows will be discontinued, making 64-bit Windows 10 as minimum requirement.
