The origins of the Repsol brand go back to 1948; in this year, Repesa (an abbreviation of Refinería de Petróleos de Escombreras) was incorporated to install an oil refinery in Cartagena's Escombreras valley, which would become operational in 1951. In 1968, a logo was adopted for Repsol, at that time a Repesa-owned brand of motor oil.

In 1987, a new logo was adopted by the brand, developed by Wolff Olins; this coincided with the formation of Repsol as a group of companies, comprising of former companies in which the Spanish government had a majority stake in;

1997–2012

A new design of the 1987 logo was adopted, putting the isotype inside a dark-blue square; this coincided with the completion of the company's privatisation, with the last government stake (10%) being sold off at an initial public offering. In 1999, Repsol acquired a near-total stake of 97% in the Argentinian oil company YPF, changing its official name to Repsol-YPF SA in the process.
