Foot Locker was founded in 1974 by the Kinney Shoe Corporation, then a subsidiary of the F.W. Woolworth Co.

After closing its chain of Woolworth stores a year prior, parent company Woolworth Corporation changed its name to Venator Group in 1998, focusing exclusively on its Foot Locker, Eastbay, and Champs Sports brands. It would change again to Foot Locker, Inc. in 2001 to reflect their most successful division.
