After Exxon sold the rights of Esso to Bridas Corporation in 2011, the company was renamed as Axion Energy in the following year. However, the name "Esso" was still used by Bridas until all the stations in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay began to be rebranded in 2014.

As of 2017, Axion Energy is owned by Pan American Energy.
