KNBH

1949–1953

Channel 4 first went on the air as KNBH (standing for "NBC Hollywood") on January 16, 1949. It was the second-to-last VHF station in Los Angeles to debut, and the last of NBC's five original owned-and-operated stations to sign on. Unlike the other four, KNBH was the only NBC-owned television station that did not benefit from having a sister radio station.

Like its New York counterpart, KNBH became KRCA (for NBC's then-parent company, the Radio Corporation of America) on October 18, 1954.

KNBC (-TV)

1962–1971 (primary)

On November 11, 1962, two years after its New York counterpart became WNBC-TV, KRCA changed the call letters to KNBC, after KNBR changed from the same callsign in a San Francisco radio station with FCC authorization. Since then, both sister NBC TV stations share call letters with the last three letters. In this case, this station starts with "K".

The station modified its callsign to KNBC-TV in August 1986, shortly after NBC's parent RCA was purchased by General Electric. This version of the 1985 logo was only in use for a short period of time, with NBC changing its logo in May 1986.

1986–1994

This was also shared with then-fellow affiliate WCIV (now WGWG) in Charleston, South Carolina, during the same time until 1991. This logo continued to be seen on its news openings and in the newsroom until 1994.

The "4" is also shared with sister stations WNBC in New York City, WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., and until 1995, KCNC-TV in Denver, and WTVJ in Miami–Fort Lauderdale. The "-TV" suffix was once again and finally omitted on September 6, 1995.
