Amtrak is the largest railroad service in America. Serving through 500 destinations in the United States and Canada, Amtrak receives a combination of state and federal subsidies but is managed as a for-profit organization.

In 1970, Congress passed a bill to create the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. The service was initially planning to market itself as Railpax, but following consultation with the New York firm Lippincott & Margulies, the name Amtrak was chosen. It is a combination of the word "America" and "track". Lippincott also designed the logo and colors for the trains. Amtrak commenced operation on May 1, 1971.

In 2000, Amtrak was given a new identity for the first time. The new identity was created by O+CO.
